22 And (A)the standard of the camp of the people of Ephraim set out by their companies, and over their company was (B)Elishama the son of Ammihud. 23 And over the company of the tribe of the people of Manasseh was (C)Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. 24 And over the company of the tribe of the people of Benjamin was (D)Abidan the son of Gideoni.

25 Then (E)the standard of the camp of the people of Dan, acting as the (F)rear guard of all the camps, set out by their companies, and over their company was (G)Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. 26 And over the company of the tribe of the people of Asher was (H)Pagiel the son of Ochran. 27 And over the company of the tribe of the people of Naphtali was (I)Ahira the son of Enan. 28 (J)This was the order of march of the people of Israel by their companies, when they set out.

29 And Moses said to Hobab the son of (K)Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, (L)‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do good to you, for (M)the Lord has promised good to Israel.” 30 But he said to him, “I will not go. I will depart to my own land and to my kindred.” 31 And he said, “Please do not leave us, for you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will serve (N)as eyes for us. 32 And if you do go with us, (O)whatever good the Lord will do to us, the same will we do to you.”

33 So they set out from (P)the mount of the Lord three days' journey. And the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them three days' journey, to seek out (Q)a resting place for them. 34 (R)And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day, whenever they set out from the camp.

35 And whenever the ark set out, Moses said, (S)“Arise, O Lord, and let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee before you.” 36 And when it rested, he said, “Return, O Lord, to the ten thousand thousands of Israel.”

The Death of Saul and His Sons

10 (A)Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was wounded by the archers. Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died. Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together. And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army[a] had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and lived in them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to their idols and to the people. 10 And they put his armor in the temple of their gods and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon. 11 But when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all the valiant men arose and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.

13 So Saul died (B)for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also (C)consulted a medium, seeking guidance. 14 He (D)did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and (E)turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

David Anointed King

11 (F)Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord your God said to you, (G)‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel, (H)according to the word of the Lord by Samuel.

David Takes Jerusalem

And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, (I)that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, (J)the inhabitants of the land. The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first (K)shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. And David (L)became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.

Prophecy Against Gog

38 The word of the Lord came to me: (A)“Son of man, (B)set your face toward (C)Gog, of the land of (D)Magog, the (E)chief prince of (F)Meshech[a] and (G)Tubal, and (H)prophesy against him and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, (I)I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech[b] and Tubal. (J)And I will turn you about and (K)put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and (L)all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. (M)Persia, (N)Cush, and (O)Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; (P)Gomer and all his (Q)hordes; (R)Beth-togarmah from (S)the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—(T)many peoples are with you.

(U)“Be ready and keep ready, you and all your hosts that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them. (V)After many days you will be mustered. (W)In the latter years you will go against (X)the land that is restored from war, the land whose people (Y)were gathered from many peoples upon (Z)the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the peoples and (AA)now dwell securely, all of them. You will advance, coming on (AB)like a storm. You will be (AC)like a cloud covering the land, you and all your (AD)hordes, and many peoples with you.

10 “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, (AE)thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme 11 and say, ‘I will go up against (AF)the land of unwalled villages. I will fall upon (AG)the quiet people who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having no bars or gates,’ 12 to seize spoil and carry off plunder, to turn your hand against (AH)the waste places that are now inhabited, and (AI)the people who were gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, (AJ)who dwell at the center of the earth. 13 (AK)Sheba and (AL)Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all (AM)its leaders[c] will say to you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? Have you assembled your hosts to carry off plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to seize great spoil?’

14 “Therefore, (AN)son of man, prophesy, and say to (AO)Gog, Thus says the Lord God: On that day when my people Israel are (AP)dwelling securely, (AQ)will you not know it? 15 You will come from your place out of (AR)the uttermost parts of the north, you and (AS)many peoples with you, (AT)all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army. 16 You will come up against my people Israel, (AU)like a cloud covering the land. (AV)In the latter days I will bring you against my land, that the nations may know me, when through you, O Gog, (AW)I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.

My Soul Waits for the Lord

A Song of (A)Ascents.

130 Out of (B)the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
    O Lord, hear my voice!
(C)Let your ears be attentive
to (D)the voice of my pleas for mercy!

If you, O Lord, should (E)mark iniquities,
    O Lord, who could (F)stand?
But with you there is (G)forgiveness,
    (H)that you may be feared.

I (I)wait for the Lord, (J)my soul waits,
    and (K)in his word I hope;
my soul (L)waits for the Lord
more than (M)watchmen for (N)the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, (O)hope in the Lord!
For (P)with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption.
And he will (Q)redeem Israel
    from all his iniquities.

18 And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in (A)a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are (B)a severe man. You take (C)what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, (D)‘I will condemn you with your own words, (E)you wicked servant! You knew that I was (F)a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that (G)to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But (H)as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (I)slaughter them before me.’”

Greeting

Paul and Timothy, servants[a] of Christ Jesus,

To all the (A)saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the (B)overseers[b] and (C)deacons:[c]

(D)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

(E)I thank my God (F)in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, (G)because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began (H)a good work in you (I)will bring it to completion at (J)the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you (K)in my heart, for you are all (L)partakers with me of grace,[d] both (M)in my imprisonment and in (N)the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For (O)God is my witness, (P)how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. And it is my prayer that (Q)your love may abound more and more, (R)with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, (S)and so be pure and blameless (T)for the day of Christ, 11 filled (U)with the fruit of righteousness that comes (V)through Jesus Christ, (W)to the glory and praise of God.
